Looking back at 2023: a year in review at HRB Open Research
| 14 December, 2023 | Zoe Brooke |
As another year comes to a close, we’re reflecting on some of the biggest achievements of HRB Open Research and its authors in 2023.
2023 in numbers
2023 was another great year for HRB Open Research, and it retained its spot as the most popular open access publishing venue for HRB-funded researchers.

At the time of writing, 65 articles had been published on the platform this year from 416 HRB-funded authors, sharing insights across a range of medical and health sciences, from how to prioritise dementia research objectives in Ireland to out-of-hospital cardiac arrest outcomes.
48 of these articles have already gone on to pass peer review and be indexed in PubMed and Scopus.
These articles published in 2023 accrued over 11,400 views and over 1,300 downloads, demonstrating the significant visibility of articles published on the platform and the benefits for authors in reaching wider audiences when publishing open access.

Spotlighting diverse article types
A key benefit of the HRB Open Research publishing model is its support for all research outputs and the ability for researchers to publish these outputs as different article types, including Data Notes, Method Articles, Systematic Reviews, and Research Notes.
We explored the importance of different article types further in our blog.
Discover some of these diverse article types from 2023:
Method Article: Formal health care costs among older people in Ireland: methods and estimates using The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA)
Data Note: Cohort profile update: The Cork and Kerry Diabetes and Heart Disease Study
Systematic Review: Promoting men’s awareness, self-examination, and help-seeking for testicular disorders: a systematic review of interventions
Looking to the future
We want to take this opportunity to thank all the authors and peer reviewers who have published and reviewed with HRB Open Research this year.
We look forward to seeing more cutting-edge research published in 2024, and discovering where the research agenda goes next.
